Domestic violence is one of the most difficult challenges facing society today – yet much of the support currently available focuses on the acute phase. Sundsvall entrepreneur Linda Bjermqvist is now developing Concensra, an anonymous web service designed to provide structured support before, during, and after a breakup. This spring, the tool is being tested at one of the country's women's shelters.
A place in a shelter can be the difference between life and death. But the path to get there—and the time afterward—is often unclear and overwhelming. Those who leave a violent relationship are also expected to navigate contacts with social services, the police, schools, healthcare, and other authorities on their own, while in the midst of a crisis.
Research shows that victims return an average of five to seven times before finally leaving. Instead of getting stuck in danger, I want to shift the focus to preparation and moving step by step toward greater security and freedom of action, says Linda Bjermqvist.
Concensra is an anonymous, web-based service that provides structured guidance through the breakup process. The tool highlights how violence often builds up gradually and how it is common to feel torn during the breakup process. The service also includes practical support, for example regarding children's schooling, contacts with authorities, and other decisions that arise when moving.
"Making lots of new contacts and filling out tons of forms can easily become overwhelming in an already vulnerable situation," says Linda.
The idea for Concensra emerged when Linda began gathering information, structuring it, and filling in the gaps she saw in the support system. When she showed the material to a friend, she was encouraged to take the next step and develop it further.
The tool is designed to be easy to use even when cognitive abilities are impaired, which can occur during times of high stress, anxiety, or trauma. More language versions are planned.
After the trial period at the women's shelter, a youth organization may be the next testing ground. Researchers at Mid Sweden University have also shown interest in the solution.
Concensra is part of BizMaker's Business Incubator program and has also been granted an innovation check from Region Västernorrland. The ambition is to eventually reach municipalities, regions, and authorities as a complement to existing support initiatives.
"The goal is that no one should have to navigate this process alone," Linda concludes.
