"Now I stand strong when the economy turns" - Mobilbetong i Ånges' journey with Business ScaleUp

Is it the wrong time to take a business development program when demand is plummeting? Not at all, according to Ånge entrepreneur Magnus Nelhagen."I have learned to think more strategically and am better equipped for the future," he says.

In 2023, Magnus Nelhagen, owner ofMobilbetong in Ånge, started BizMaker's tailor-made business development program Business Scaleup.

Since taking over the company - which produces cast-in-place concrete in Västernorrland, Jämtland and Härjedalen - in 2011, he has tried to create a clearer structure, including better financial monitoring.

- But neither the time nor the skills have been enough. That's why it felt so right to participate in the program when I got the chance.

For 18 months, he worked with two advisors from BizMaker and four external coaches who mapped out the business, developed a roadmap and provided expertise.

- I have gained many new insights. Especially about the importance of financial foresight and that I need relief to be able to work strategically.

What has been the biggest challenge during the program?

- To have time to implement the new knowledge and tools in everyday life while working with operations. But I have taken several important steps in the right direction, among other things by transferring administrative tasks, such as record keeping in the concrete section, to others in the team," says Magnus Nelhagen.

- Magnus has laid the foundation for a long-term growth journey. Through effective financial management, building the right support in the organization and delegating responsibility, he has created the conditions for growth in a controlled manner with a clear strategy going forward, says business advisor Pelle Berglund, BizMaker.

Changing direction with the help of Business Scaleup

The idea was that Magnus would get help from the development program to scale up the company. But the tough economic climate, particularly in wind and hydropower, meant he was forced to pull the brakes and shrink the business instead.

Something that would have been even more difficult without the support of coach Lena Oskarsson, Permascand.

- She was an invaluable support in connection with the tough layoffs we were forced to make in the fall of 2024," says Magnus.

While waiting for the demand for concrete to pick up again, the company is staying afloat by running gravel, graders and wheel loaders.

Without the business development program, the recovery would be much more difficult, says Magnus.

- I have gained important tools and see development opportunities ahead - perhaps even in the form of more partners. One thing is certain: I have learned the importance of acting in time and thinking strategically," he says.
