ICA Odenhallen in Östersund became the first store in Östersund to be able to offer its customers store-grown herbs. Thanks to the Blue-Green Cultivation system, the basil now does not have to travel long distances by truck before it reaches the store.
The store uses a newly upgraded system for cultivation delivered by BlåGrön Odling from Härnösand. For several years, the company has been working on developing systems for in-store cultivation. A climate-smart circular and closed cultivation system based on hydroponics.
The freshly harvested plants now only need to be moved a few meters in the store to the sales shelf. The store currently grows coriander and basil and soon new crops can be added to the range.
The staff in the store, who manage the cultivation themselves, are supported by a cultivation schedule that they pull out from their mobile phones. Three to four times a year, deliveries of pre-sown cultivation pucks are delivered and put into the cultivation cabinet as a replacement for the seedlings that are harvested.
"We sell more than you can produce, and customers really appreciate that we now grow in the store. The customers are very positive and praise us for our freshly harvested and fresh herbs," says store manager Tobias Åhman.
About Blue-Green Cultivation
Olof Frensborg is the company's main owner and co-founder, but BlåGrön Odling AB would never have been started if Olof had not met Nawras Alashour, who came with the large wave of refugees from Syria. One of the first times they met was in a cell in the then defunct prison in Härnösand, which had been converted into a refugee center.
